Monterey Parkinson’s Support Group ~ About Us
The Monterey Parkinson’s Disease Support Group (MPSG) was started in the mid-1990s by Pacific Grovian Helen Garrett whose husband was a Parkinson’s patient for several years. At that time, many local residents had been car-pooling up to Mountain View to attend programs about Parkinson’s Disease issues. They gladly supported the idea of a local group which would meet on a regular basis to learn and to share.
Today our many members come from all over the Monterey Peninsula, North Monterey County, and Salinas. Attendance at meetings varies between 20-40.
Members are involved in various ways, such as program development, recruiting speakers, helping with refreshments, name tags, website or other IT issues. We have had activities such as museum visits organized by our members.
Parkinson’s patients who live in the area are welcome to participate in our meetings and activities along with their “support person,” if they wish.
Our mission is to empower individuals and families to meet the challenges of living with Parkinson’s Disease through sharing of information, education, personal support, and advocacy for a cure.
